    Choosing Colors for Contrast Trim

    Oct 7, 2021 · Leave a Comment

Painting trim darker than walls in the bonus room!

Contrast trim is a trend I've been eyeballing for a while now. It's a fun way to add color and I liked it for in here to still highlight the architectural detail of the original trim. And since the trim in the bonus room had already been painted (sad!) and was in need of a fresh coat, it seemed like the perfect chance to jazz it up with some color!

Some inspiration for contrast trim I liked from around the internet included:

I wanted something neutral-feeling, while still having color for in here. And per usual, I was being drawn to the blues, which I think is a star player for being a color that plays nicely with a range of decor.

One tip I have for picking colors that aren't too bold is to look in the neutral parts of the paint deck (greys, beiges, whites), and choose something that leans toward the color you want. A hard part of picking lighter blues is getting one that doesn't feel like a baby blue, and this strategy worked amazingly well in avoiding anything juvenile!

I ended up with Benjamin Moore's Boothbay Gray, which is a really pretty greyish-blue. Believe it or not, this is actually considered a gray and I found it in the gray part of my paint deck. It looks so blue in here!

Once I swatched it out, I put four of the white samples I had leftover from painting the porch to see what I liked best with it. I wanted something bright white and, of course, CONTRAST, so went with Simply White (the top one!).

A hard part of choosing a color for contrast trim is that you are (likely) also selecting a wall color at the same time. The method of choosing a trim color first, and then choosing a wall color, saved me from a lot of indecision. Highly recommend picking one before you pick the other!

And that wraps up week two of the One Room Challenge! Here's the breakdown of what to expect in the next 6 weeks of the bonus room transformation:

    • Week 1: Plans for the Bonus Room
    • Week 2: Contrast Trim (you are here!)
    • Week 3: Wrapping Closet
    • Week 4: Whiteboard Wall
    • Week 5: IKEA Desk Hack!
    • Week 6: Countertop for Desk
    • Week 7: Desk Organization
    • Week 8: Reveal!

Come back next week for the wrapping closet of my dreams! In the meantime, you can head to Instagram for progress as it happens. See you then!
